Fringe Reflections

— 26th September 2014 —

We just wrapped another sold-out season of Reception: The Musical at The Butterfly Club for the Melbourne Fringe Festival. What a dream run! There are so many stories I could tell you. So many incredibly humbling and heartwarming responses from old and new friends, world renowned composers, conductors, musicians, industry judges, critics.

But, I keep coming back to the people who have shared this experience. The ones who laugh knowingly and elbow each other throughout the show. The ones who can't wait to tell me their story and to act out their own jobs for me in the foyer!

I'm overwhelmed that these little songs about my old day job can help others to feel proud of their work. It's more than we could've imagined. Thank you to all of our beautiful audiences.

Next up, we're off to my hometown of Dubbo, NSW for a one-night only performance of Reception as part of the DREAM Festival on Friday 24 October. Tickets and info.

PS Enjoy the show? You can vote for Reception: The Musical in the Melbourne Fringe Festival People's Choice Award! Voting closes on Friday 3 Oct at midnight.

Thrilled to have landed a half page spread in the Saturday Age newspaper today!

There's always plenty of healthy competition for coverage in Melbourne, but with the Fringe Festival about to launch, there are literally 400 other independent shows vying for a plug. Looking at this generous article and pic, I'm one very happy little receptionist!

Thanks to journalist Lawrence Money for the great write up. (And for the delightful interview process - pasta and laughter in a Melbourne laneway.)

On Air and on hold

— 11th September 2014 —

What a fun way to spend a Thursday evening. Tonight, composer Peter de Jager and I headed to ABC studios in Southbank to chat about Reception: The Musical with Lindy Burns for Evenings on ABC 774 Melbourne.

Lindy started the interview by stumbling on Peter's surname - a perfect segue into why we wrote the show! I told Lindy about the list of names I collected when working as a receptionist at the Australian National Academy of Music where Peter was studying piano before launching into "My Name is Bethany (Not Stephanie)".

We also got a chance to demonstrate some of the musical 'sound effects' that are used throughout the show, such as the phone ringing and the photocopier breaking down.

As we chatted away, listeners called in and sent texts about their own experiences of working in offices. I love the way people can relate to this material!

Looking forward to kicking off our return season for the Fringe Festival next week.

Back in the Swivel

— 10th September 2014 —

We're lining up the pens, polishing the desk and tuning up the piano. Reception: The Musical is moving back into The Butterfly Club for the Melbourne Fringe Festival, and we couldn't be more excited.

Rehearsals are in progress - it's been great to get back into the swivel of things. If you saw the show last time, be sure to pass on the memo. If you missed it last time, you're invited to join our celebration of administration.
